Week Four

This week was the last week of reading SOLD. Lakshmi is starting to show signs of helplessness, and is starting to give up on her hope of reaching home, after being told that Mumtaz will never let her go, even if she does pay off her debts. Happiness house is becoming a lonely place, with many of Lakshmis friends being kicked out, onto the streets, never to be seen again. Lakshmi is a very strong character, without her courage, she surely wouldn’t have come this far in happiness house. Despite the torture and hard times, Lakshmi still succeeded to escape that evil house, and her hope of reaching home was en lighted once more. I have really enjoyed reading SOLD, and it has opened my eyes to what is really happening out there, in the real world.

Week Three.

This week Lakshmi is really pushed to her limits. The experience is challenging her physically and mentally. Lakshmi meets a new friend who she finds very comforting in her experience, and I think he is the reason Lakshmi is still alive in that horrible ‘happiness house.’ He brings happiness to her, by showing her respect, and treating her as a human, not a slave or animal, as she has spent most of her life as. He gives her the feeling of being appreciated, which makes her happy in such a lonely and dark place. I feel frustrated that the police or authorities have not stopped this organisation yet. It sickens me to think that there are police out there tracking down people for speeding once off, or parking in the wrong spot, while there are places like this, where little innocent girls are living out their lives. No one deserves to grow up in these conditions, thinking that these places are the real world, because there is so much more for them out there in the world, I hope that next week, Lakshmi discovers that place for herself.

Week Two

Reading this book is making me so angry, and frustrated that I can’t do anything to help Lakshmi’s situation. This book is educating me about gender equality, and why it is such a big problem that faces our society. A character in the book I really like is Shahanna. She shows great strength, and is so kind towards Lakshmi, and does all she can to help her out. The first time she was mentioned in the book, I could immediately tell she had been at ‘Happiness House’ for a lot longer than Lakshmi, and she was getting used to it. As I read about Lakshmi’s beatings and whippings, I wonder how characters like Mumtaz, Lakshmi’s mistress, can live with herself. If I was her, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night, for putting those young girls through those disgraceful acts. This book is so addictive, and teaches a lot about the real world.

Week One

Reading this book makes me realise how lucky I am to be in a place where women and men are treated equally. The way that women are treated in this book is disgraceful. They are shown no respect at all, and are forced to still show respect and treat the men to whatever they wish. My favourite character is Lakshmi. She shows such courage and resilience, and is such a strong person to still be able to dream and be a child, even though she has been put in such an inhumane place. Laksmis Step Father deserves to be the one living in the shoes of Lakshmi, because of the selfishness he shows his family. I hope that Lakshmi and her Mother can start living their life, as any human deserves too.
